So, data is (going to be) very important for Scotch Whisky Investments. A difficult part of the business is selling the whisky, so knowing which whiskies are being sold on which platforms for which prices is important.

That’s where the scraping comes in.

There are different platforms that deal with whisky prices and with whisky reviews. Both are important. Besides that, there are all the Scotch distilleries.

To get a bit of a grasp on everything that is out there, let’s divide the content up.

First, there are the 5 regions:

Scotch areas Link to heading

  • Highland
  • Speyside
  • Island
  • Lowland
  • Islay
  • Campbeltown

Within each of the regions, there are the distilleries, both the ones that still exist, as well as the ones that no onger exist, but from which there might be some rare whisky out there.

Knowing the prices of the whiskies as they are offered by the distilleries is useful. This means getting the addresses of the sites on which they sell their whisky and scraping them on a regular basis (weekly should be fine).

Getting images and descriptions is useful, as well as reviews.

In my opinion, it would be ideal to be able to search for whiskies in different ways:

  • by brand/distillerie
  • by age
  • by year
  • by region
  • by owner
  • by alcohol percentage
  • by (estimated) price

So the task at hand is:

  • find all places that sell single malt whisky
  • build a scraper to get the information from that site

To get a head-start, we can start by scraping the “big sites”, whiskybase and whiskystats.
